The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has five openings for Mechanic A in Lansing, MI, as part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay Rate: $42.86 - $48.26 per hour

Position Summary

Installs and repairs water service and mains, including such tasks as making taps, setting meters, locating lines, and completing field records.

Essential Functions

  • Performs all tasks required to install water services such as: making large and small taps, perform hydro- stops, operating bore machine, installing copper tubing, ...
  • Performs all tasks required to repair water services including copper flaring, installing sweat fittings, requiring the use of oxyacetylene torch.
  • Completes all necessary field records such as service orders, shop orders, field cards and fills in for Crew Leader on as-needed basis.
  • Assists in water main installation and repair to include restoration work.
  • Job tasks require operation of various tools such as jackhammer, rock drill, oxyacetylene torch, cutoff saws and more.
  • Operates various vehicles such as crew truck, van, and pickup truck.
  • Required to follow BWL safety manual and wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Shall attend all training for safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA
  • Must be available for calls after hours, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or necessitated by job responsibilities.

Required

Job Specifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be qualified in all areas of Water Laborer (1-2 years of experience working with water infrastructure).
  • Candidates must possess a valid MI driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Upon hire they must provide proof of successful completion of the State of MI written portion of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) examination and pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.
  • Within 6 months of the date of hire they must successfully pass the MI CDL skills/road.
  • Internal applicants must currently possess valid MI CDL with required endorsements or at minimum, pass DOT physical exam and State of MI written portion of CDL examination within 15 days of transfer.
  • Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.

Preferred

  • S-3 Michigan Department of Public Health certification.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • This job requires lifting, carrying, gripping, pushing or pulling of materials requiring the generation of physical force of up to 80 pounds.
  • Considerable walking on uneven construction sites, some walking with heavy loads.
  • Adequate vision required to drive vehicles, operate equipment, and perform wide-variety of other job tasks safely and accurately.
  • Adequate hearing required to detect backup warning alarms on vehicles and to communicate with crew member.
  • All temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Occasional exposure to noise levels requiring hearing protection.
  • Occasional exposure to mud and dust.
  • Occasionally required to work in confined spaces, crawl spaces, etc.
  • May be exposed to asbestos & lead.
